Georgia Burn Season Dates
Georgia burn searches change by season. Summer searches usually ask whether an EPD burn ban is active. Fall and winter searches usually ask whether today is a burn day, whether a permit is needed, and what local rules apply.
Right now, Georgia is in the EPD summer open burning ban window (May 1 - September 30). Burn season does not start for another 25 days, on October 1.
May 1 through September 30: EPD Summer Burn Ban Window
Georgia EPD lists 54 counties under the annual summer open burning ban. During this window, county pages should first answer whether the EPD summer rule applies.
October 1 through April 30: Burn Season and Permit Checks
After the summer ozone-rule window ends, a county showing no active statewide summer ban is not the same as automatic permission to burn. The next checks are GFC permits, what material you plan to burn, local fire authority approval, and current fire weather.
One exemption worth knowing during burn season: as of July 1, 2021, GFC does not require a permit for hand-piled natural vegetation and yard debris such as leaves and pine straw. Notification, local ordinances, and other material types can still require a permit, so verify the exact activity type before burning.
